I am undertaking a study about fluoride in drinking water. The aims of the study is to establish the relationship between concentration and dental problems.
Hi Cajouste, I would to advise you to read documents on health risk assessment, and articles that threat this issue. I am please to send you two of my articles on health risk assessment.
Thank Dr. Emmanuel I read the article and I see the processes that you and your colleagues use to release human health risk assessment of lead and the model can be help me in my work .
Hi Cajouste, I work in a water quality team where we have investigated every health effect that has ever been blamed on fluoride. Our area includes urban centres with low fluoride and no fluoride dosing, low fluoride with supplementary dosing, and centres with high, naturally occurring fluoride. We have recently been through a program to counter a concerted anti-fluoride campaign. You can find most of the literature we have used in our CiteULike library (http://www.citeulike.org/user/) under the tag 'fluoride'. There are also comprehensive reports on fluoridation available from WHO, USEPA and other jurisdictions.
Good luck with the study. Let me know if you need any further information.
Thanks for you answer i would to know if the fluoration of water can be cause health problem knowing the factors can be influence fluoride in drinking water like temperature , malnutrition and other
Thank you Janet for your information on water fluoridation
I find this an interesting topic after being actively involved in advocacy of fluoridation of community water supplies in New Zealand in the late 1970s. The public health experts I knew then had to fight amazing mis-information promulgated by fraudsters who produced the most unreliable garbage under the guise of ‘research evidence’ to claim that fluoridation of water supplies was dangerous.
I am amazed these same fraudsters are still around pushing their dangerous mis-information. Consequently, many communities still vote against their water supplies being fluoridated due to these scare campaigns. The benefits of fluoridation for their children are therefore denied.
People of my generation in New Zealand suffered from the lack of fluoride in our community water supplies, with enormous proportion of decayed, missing and filled teeth. That compares with our children now in their 30’s, who have virtually no DMFT due to the benefits of fluoridated water in Perth, Australia where they were raised.
A new study from New Zealand has refuted any dangers of water fluoridation when used appropriately. See below a report from the Royal Society of New Zealand, which quotes well-known public health experts.
The review of scientific evidence has found that New Zealand fluoridation levels create no health risks and provide protection against tooth decay.
The review was commissioned by Sir Peter Gluckman, the prime minister's chief science adviser, and Royal Society of New Zealand president Sir David Skegg at the request of the Auckland Council.
Scientific literature was evaluated by a panel of 5 experts, along with a lay observer with local body experience. The report was reviewed by three international experts and the director of the National Poisons Centre.
The panel paid attention to the major contentions about potential harm caused by fluoride - that it contributed to the risk of cancer, musculoskeletal and hormonal disorders - as well as to claims it had adverse effects on brain development, Skegg said.
"The panel concluded that the concerns raised by those opposed to fluoridation are not supported by the scientific evidence," he said. The report said the few studies that suggested a cancer link with community water fluoridation suffered from poor methodology and errors in analysis. The only side-effect of fluoridation was found to be mild dental fluorosis - a tooth enamel defect.
"The review finds compelling evidence that fluoridation of the water at the established and recommended levels produces broad and continuing benefits for the dental health of New Zealanders," Gluckman said. "The public can be reassured on the basis of robust scientific data that the implementation of this public health measure poses no risk of adverse health effects."( Royal Society of New Zealand)
