wow - it's been a while since I heard this mentioned. Don Knuth created the concept of "literate programming" - hoping it would catch on, in the same way that "structured programming" did. No one wants to be accused of writing an unstructured program, so the hope was that no one would willing write illiterate programs. There were some academic successes, but not much in the commercial world that I'm aware of.

Basically, literate programming is defined in a .web file. This file contains program documentation and code intermingled - rather than writing documentation after the fact. One uses TeX directives for the documentation portion, and enters the program portion directly into the same file.

Two processes are then on the input file, 'tangle' and 'weave'. It's been a while since I've used this, but from what I remember, 'tangle' takes the input file and emits the program source code for the compiler to use. It is not human readable (lots of white space and indentions), but ready for the compiler. 'weave' takes the .web input file and applies all the TeX formatting functions to it and generates a very functional document that includes the annotated source code and documentation.

If i was write the code, can i compile the program using g++ in linux?

Not with SWeave; it's for the R/S language. However, the usual thing is either to insert text as comments of the computer language or to use a tool to "tangle" (mix text/code) and "untangle" (extract text/code)

I believe CWeb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CWEB) handle the C++ code you are talking about compiling with g++ - ctangle/cweave
