I guess that you are a PhD-student looking for an introductorial paper, or bookchapter on sustained attention. So I recommend you these three great books on human performance, including classic chapters on sustained attention (with particular reference to auditory/visual modality issues):
Matthews, G., Davies, D. R., Westerman, S. J., & Stammers, R. B. (Eds.). (2000). Human performance, stress, cognition, and individual differences. Hove: Psychology Press.
Posner, M. I. (1986). Chronometric explorations of mind. New York: Oxford University Press.
-chapter 5 (alertness)
Sanders, A. F. (1998). Elements of human performance. Reaction processes and attention in human skill. Mahwah, New Jersey: Lawrence Erlbaum.
-chapter 9 (energetics)

A good review paper on current research on sustained attention is that of Langner and Eickhoff (2012). This is a meta-analysis but the introduction is a very useful theoretical debate.
Langner, R., & Eickhoff, S. B. Sustaining attention to simple tasks: a meta-analytic review of the neural mechanisms of vigilant attention. Psychol Bull, 139(4), 870-900.
