Rabya, SVM's will need a lot of floating point computations. Here are some suggestions:

1) Ask yourself the question : Do I need Floating point ? or, can I get away with Fixed point ? The answer is clear with SVM's. You need FLOATING POINT ...

2) What is the speed I need ? If your speed requirements are very low, you can save money. Microchip is great for low-priced DSPs: Here

These chips will get you 30, 40 MIPS, but, no floating point

3) TI is the leader of DSP chips in general. Check this out:

As you see from there, there are DSP's with and without floating point. They range from $5 to $160.

Of course, you won't buy the chip and solder it yourself. You need a nice eval board ... Almost every company will have an eval board for their DSP. TI is great for that.

My favorite is Beagleboard (actually, we use it here for research). Here:

This board isn't cheap ($250-ish), but, has everything ! including an ARM CPU core and OMAP TI DSP core. We installed Linux on it, and it works great ! It has USBs, you name it , everything ...

Dear Rabya. As Tolga has mentioned above both Microchip and TI have DSP designed specifically for AC motor control and both allow for SVM to be implemented. Both Microchip and TI have readily available evaluation boards, Technical Application brochures as well as sample code examples which already do this and which are freely available.

Microchip for example also interfaces to Matlab / Simulink and has a Simulink blockset available. Lubin Kerheul (google his name) has freely available blockset and he has recently joined Microchip and is currently developing the Microchip blockset to include more advanced PMW features as well as allow for synchronous sampling.

You can get academic discounts as well.

Rabya you should also look at some of the evaluation boards available. I understand the issue with TI (and others) but in some cases if you write a letter supported by your institution that it is for use for academic purposes only they will generally reconsider. We in South Africa had/have a similar problem and in general the US places an embargo on all countries as far as advanced high end DSP technology goes.

The dsPIC you mention above can most probably do what you require (see section 14 of the Ref Manual Part 1.

The Explorer 16 Development board and dsPICDEM 80 are fairly low cost and you can buy online via MICROCHIP Direct.

Greg, I use Microchip products a lot. One observation about dsPIC's is that, if you want to write Assembly language, Microchip's MPLAB IDE is more than sufficient. However , if you need a C compiler, you need a third party program. This is something very important to consider upfront. You certainly do not want to write the entire DSP algorithm in Assembly language !

I bought MikroC (from mikroElektronika) which seems to be a much better compiler than HighTech C (the one that Microchip sells). Funny thing is, since Mikroelektronika is in Serbia, it has nothing to do with US embargo's etc ! You might be able to buy the entire board and the compiler from mikroelektronika:

They seem to have an excellent choice of demo boards and/or compilers ...

I get a 25% Academic discount if I buy from Microchip's website. So, the academic discounts are not huge or anything ... but, it is something. Ironically, if I buy Mikroelektronika products from Microchip's website, I still get 25% discount, but not if I buy from MikroE directly !

I will let you figure this stuff out ! In general mikroe.com is an excellent starting point.

As far as the C-compiler goes you can download it (32 and 64 bit) from Microchip and it provides the full version for ~ 3 months after which it downgrades but still works fine for most student projects. I use Simulink and it generates the code, downloads and runs fine under the IDE. Otherwise one can use Lubin Kurheuls system which provides the hex file which one may download but it requires Simulink.
