There are several brain regions works together for even the simplest behavioral output. PFC, Amygdala, VTA, Accumbens etc. are the brain regions primarily found to be involved in regulation of the social behavior. The information flow between these regions of the brain and form a neural circuit to drive the social interaction. Take a look at these articles,

Medial nucleus of the amygdala is one of the best documented regions involved in social interactions (affiliative behaviors, aggressive behaviors, fear communication etc).

I agree with everything said above. There are two recent papers that are very informative in terms of brain areas and transmitter systems involved in social behavior. The amygdala seems to be critically involved though… Please see below:

regarding the methods, I would try to record from multiple regions and look at connectivity in terms of Coherence and directionality of the signal with Granger causality.
