I agree that "it depends on what are you trying to answer." For example, if you are trying to do an inventory of the kinds of things a respondent does, then you can use a simple set of yes-no questions to count how many of them the respondent does. But if you are trying to measure an attitude toward something, then the Likert-scale approach is more appropriate.

it depends on what are you trying to answer, differences or similiraties among two catgories .i.e. male female, you might want to include likert scale 1-5 (example Highly satisfied, satisfied..neutral---not satisfied..not satisfied at all )..

Dear Sir i think it depends on attitude, behaviorial tests. if u want to know about attitude or behavior then it is suggested to use 5 point or 7 point likert scale. it's not hard and fast rule though. But in dichotomous or three answers u will may have limited analysis.
