My input image Ikonos has a size of 6.8 GB. I'm not able to do the image processing. I would like to reduce its size. Please let me know how to do this.
The issue is very simple but it depends on the issue which need to use IKONOS image. if it requires very high resolution image for extracting urban features such as roads and buildings than you can use only panchromatic band (0.82 m spatial resolution). If classification is needed based on the VNIR bands than either you can work with the remaining 4 multispectral bands (3.2 m spatial resolution) alone or you can pan-sharpen with the panchromatic band all depends on the problem. The choice will reduce the size of the used IKONOS image.
Normally the panchromatic band takes requires the largest portion of the storage requirements.
Another way is to change the radiometric resolution. Normally, IKONOS images are 11bits you can reduce it to 8 bits which in turn reduce the storage requirements by about 27%.
you can also chnage the format of the image from TIFF format to JPEG lossless compression which also save some storage requirements.
