we must determine Cr in the matrix "air", we can collect samples of dust by high and low volume sampler. What are the best techniques for sampling, pretreatment and analysis?
In our PMLab project (see my profile) we sampled Cr(VI) in PM10 by a low volume sampler. Our analytical partners at the university of Hasselt in Belgium used an analytical method based on: " Determination of hexavalent chromium in ambient air: A story of method induced Cr(III) oxidation, Kristof Tirez et al., Atmospheric Environment 45 (2011) 5332-5341
From our technical report: Fine dust is collected on an alkaline (NaHCO3) impregnated ashless cellulose filter (Whatman 41, 47 mm – 20 µm) during 23 hours (at a flow of 2,3 m3/h). After extraction of the filter in an alkaline medium, Cr(VI) is separated from Cr(III) by means of IC. The detection of Cr(VI) is performed by an on-line coupling with ICP-MS. Be aware of conversions between the two Cr species, use (separate) spiked filters with CrIII and CrVI, in concentrations according to the expected levels in PM.
