I want to use imageJ to count the number of eggs in Gypsy Moth egg masses, but I am not sure what camera and camera lens I would need in order to do this. I have seen a couple of mosquito papers that do this using a DSLR with a macro lens, but they do not provide any other specifics. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Gypsy moth eggs are ~1mm in diameter.

I’ve been taking high-res macrophotographs of my specimen (ground beetles) for part of my doctoral research. I used a canon 5D DSLR and with the MPE 65 lens, along with cognisys stackshot (this just moves the camera forward a set number of times). I then use HeliconFocus to stack the in focus pixels and create a single image of a specimen that is all in focus.
That being said, you could probably get away with a much cheaper setup. Before I had this equipment, I used a canon rebel (their entry level DSLRs) with their EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. It has more depth of field than the MPE. It is slightly more versatile than my setup and it would allow you to use it for more than just this work (non-gypsy moth insect photography).
If you do go this route, remember to get a decent external flash. Canon flashes are quite expensive so I used a Yonguo speedlite flash (I’ve been using them for 4 years at this point and they are wonderful). As well, a tripod will help with stability and decrease any unintentional movement on your part that may make the images blurry.

I would like to suggest using Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x lens with a high level camera. After take numerous different layers photographs. Do stack, and you will get a nice photo. You can use "Helicon" or "Combine ZP" (free) to do stack.
