Although they are now quite old, you may find that the papers of J A R Anderson on the developement of freshwater peat swamps and their forests in Sararwak, Malyasia give a good background on the formation of extensive deep tropical peats.

Thanks Armine. In fact, I have got Page et al. (2010) paper where they dealt the tropical peatlands of Southeast Asia.
