VLPs and the nanoparticles are primarily mime of the viral particle: the aim is to present a single antigen on the surface of the pseudo membrane while keeping the ideal conformation.
If there are very few publications on the subject, it is primarily because most of the work is protected by patents.
The adjuvant plays different and multiple roles. It can alter the structure of proteins and have a direct effect on the conformational epitopes, it may recruit different cell populations (NK, T, DCs), and it also serves as retardant.
The selection of epitopes is done only by dendritic cells, and as there is as much difference between the multiple DC, and the different tissue compartments that host these DCs, it is especially the injection route which takes precedence over the adjuvant for the selection of the epitope.
Numerous receptors DCs are responsible for the selection and presentation of epitopes that will be kept.
For example: Langerin, DC SIGN, SIGN like DC, MR, MR like, ASGPR, DCIR, FDF03, TLRs ...
And immunotolerant receptors: scavengers, CD303 ...
