I would also suggest that you look at Joanna Macy's books - perhaps particularly "Coming Back to Life" (with Molly Young Brown).

Hi Helen,David Orr's seminal work;'Earth in Mind' provides a very clear and articulate framing and synthesis. I believe it should be required reading for all teachers. His other works are also very good but Earth in Mind is excellent.

The Constructive Postmodern movement (Center for Process Studies @ www.ctr4process.org) has a very active community of environmental educators and ethicists working from a deep ecology perspective.  They are very active with Chinese scholars woking to incarnate Ecological Civilization (thriving people, thriving communities, flourishing Nature, flourishing Cosmic Ecopoisis).  Tu Weiming touches on post enlightenment embodied thinking and learning to be human-in-community-in-nature.  Adam C. Scarfe's edited volume "The Adventure of Education" addresses philosophies of education that integrally support learning within a deep ecology paradigm.  They, and other process philosophers, address rethinking philosophical anthropology in order to overcome the Western mind/body split and re-envision education and self-development from a holistic discourse of embodiment and re-enchantment.  The Center for Process Studies is holding "Seizing an Alternative: Toward an Ecological Civilization Conference" in June 2015 as their 10th International Whitehead Conference & 9th International Forum on Ecological Civilization. 

It might be useful to see how education and deep ecology are fundamentally different to better understand the inherent limitations.

Deep ecology is about relationships, interdependent and symbiotic. The gestalt where  the whole equals more than just the sum of its parts.

Education dissects the parts, rewards the specialists and pretty much ignores the generalists or those who seek larger integration and synthesis. One friend said higher education is mostly about 'ritualized obedience that leads to privilege'. As a generalist myself, I can attest to the difficulties of trying to get new ideas to the table.

If education was truly influenced by deep ecology our research would be far more transparent, socially relevant and accessible to all relevant questions and persons.

Craig,  I both agree and disagree with your answer.  Deep ecology is about flourishing relationships.  Education within Western civilizations has been part of a disembodied and disenchanted discourse that radically divides the material body from an enduring, self-identical self (mind or consciousness) [see Arran Gare's work].  Education has been about cognitively learning "facts" and methods of neo-Newtonian science.  Ethics and full development of the self-in-community-in-nature has been marginalized and Nature has been an other or object to be exploited or conserved with Bentham's utilitarianism (greatest good).

Education, however, can be done - and even researched - from a Deep Ecology perspective.  The Constructive Postmodern community of educators and philosophers are using the metaphysics of organism and experience pioneered by Alfred North Whitehead (as well as Herder, Peirce, Schelling, and others) to rethink education and learning with the body within an ecological philosophy of organisms semiotically interlinked and evolving/growing/becoming/belonging/being/perishing within communities of communities of ecologies.

it depends how broad your definition of deep ecology is. There are links between deep ecology and other educational approaches, like earth education (van Matre)  or perhaps wilderness education or education for ecoliteracy (Capra) are. There also might be links to David Selby in some of his papers (A Darker shade of green).

Perhaps part of the difficulty with this question is the fundamental schism between education (which seeks to dissect the world) and deep ecology or I'll call it NATURE which is attached to everything. It's the difference between linear and non-linear thinking/understanding. Thus can't be truly understood from linear or educational language.
