In the metallurgical lab we are used to working with destructive testing methods to characterize the properties of the different elements/parts, but sometimes it comes to analyze functional parts that depending on the results, can continue working. One of these functional parts are the heating elements of the furnace, and I would be interested to learn more about the NDT that can be applied to anaylze the status of W-Mesh heating elements of the sintering furnace. Thanks in advance for any information.
Visual analysis (visible defects, loss of gloss and others) and measurement of the electrical resistance: Resistance increases as the heating elements wear out.
You could try an Infrared Thermal Camera to detect hot spots along the elements which may indicate spots of high resistance and potential failure points.
