I'm doing PCB analysis using GCMS on microplastic samples. I'm somewhat confused between those standards. As per my understanding from literature readings, surrogate standards are used to monitor the efficiency of sample treatment from extraction to instrumentation. Recovery standards are used to monitor column chromatography cleanup efficiency while internal standards are used to gauge instrumentation efficiency. External standards are used for instrument calibration to obtain calibration curve. Please correct me if I get it wrong.

Secondly, is it necessary to use isotope/radiolabeled PCB as surrogate, internal and recovery standards?
