I have determined the heavy metal levels (Zn, Fe, Mn, Pb and Cd) in tea leaves from chemically weeded tea plantations and non-chemically weeded tea plantation. However, I have recorded that the Lead (Pb) levels are significantly high in tea leaves from chemically weeded plantations.
Can anyone explain the process of accumulating heavy metals in these tea leaves?
Are you sure that the type of weeding is really the only difference?? Are e.g. type of soil, type of plant, age, watersupply or distance to traffic all identical?? If not .......
Yes... I collected samples from nearby two plots where chemally weeded and manualy weeded... Please see the attached map.

I am not an expert on plant physiology, so I am not sure about uptake by the roots. Probably it is possible, but I have no idea about the quantitative aspects of that.
In our country the Pb in or on plants was mainly by deposition from the air, therefore my question about the weed solution. Best of luck with your problem.

One more point: I assume that machines have been used in the chemical weeding. If so, what was the Pb content of the fuel used in those machines? That might also be a contributor.
There so many factors need to consider for Pb uptake. First one, you need to collect control soli and plant sample and check weather their significance. Moreover, you need to collect more general parameters, organic fractions, pH, nutrients, microbial activity, and heavy metals. Then you can come up with no variations. Later you can evaluate chemical application and non application sites. Chemical addition also need to analyze. Finally you can collect continue all previous experiment for post sites and check weather the variations available or not. Analytical technique also critical for analysis. Check the limit of detection, limit of qualification, method detection limit for the respective techniques. From all you can go for comprehensive interpretation.
