Late October I found this plant in Southern China (just south of Guilin, province of Guangxi). It was abundant in that area. It shows flowers like those of Scrophulariaceae, but has 5-foliolate leaves, as found in Vitex, which is a genus of plants in an adjacent family. Can anyone give a hint about its identity?
This is surely Vitex of the family Verbenaceae. I think this species is Vitex pinnata L. ( V. pubescens) which has a very wide distribution (India, Myanmar,Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Parts of China, Thayland, Malaysia etc.)
Probably forms of Vitex negundo L. (formerly Verbenaceae, now Lamiaceae) which is widespread and often very common within China

I agree with Vitex negundo. Leaves not as wide as those of Vitex pinnata.

Vitex pinnata is not found in China (http://efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=134644). This certainly looks Vitex negundo L. of family Lamiaceae (= Verbenaceae), which is found in Guangxi, South China (http://efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=200019442).
