I had made a copolymer with Acrylic acid and maleic anhydride. Then what will be the Reactive functional group of this polymer. Both the monomers used having carboxylic acid as functional group. Can, I that carboxylic group as Reactive functional group of this polymer. Kindly anyone guide me.
Hello dear, in this reaction the double bond of the monomers reacted. Therefore, the acid groups of the maleic anhydride and acrylic acids remained without react. The acid groups are in your copolymer and these groups can reacted for condensation polymerization because, these group are reactive for this polymerization type, but it does not reactive for addition polymerization. The anhydride units are more reactive functional groups compared to the acidic units "which are also quite reactive". When the anhydride units convert to acidic groups, reactivity decreases but does not vanish.
