Books from EJ Cox, Edward G. Bellinger, may help you in identification of your samples.

Although European these books may be of help:
Kelly, M. (2000). Identification of common benthic diatoms in rivers, Field Studies 9, pp. 583-700. [This is an introductory guide to benthic diatoms in the UK].
Cox, EJ. (1996). Identification of freshwater diatoms from live material, Chapman & Hall, London. [There is a key that covers common freshwater diatoms found in the British Isles].
There is also a five volume set of keys/photos/species descriptions by Krammer, K. and Lange-Bertalot, H. titled Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa: Bacillariophyceae. [These look at diatoms within middle Europe - the species descriptions are in German, however book 5 does have a key that is translated in English and French]. Follow the Springer link for these 5 books.
