I am directing a MA thesis on the role of food and meals in German travel writing from China in the late Qing Dynasty. Comparative views welcome. Poles of attention are the usage of culinary discourse as a strategy of colonial 'othering', and/or of the 'Baedekerization' of the world in the early age of tourism.
