I think it was an accidental inclusion. What I want to resolve is whether it is an Indian species or US species. The insect was alive inside the plastic cover.

Its a stored product insect. Hope you ve not thrown away the package in which you found the the insect. There may be some eggs there if it was a female. Suggest you put some wheat flour/ peanuts in the pack. Watch for some weeks. you may have some adults emerging in few weeks.
Dear Mr. Sumodan I agree with Dr.Andras it s far to be tribolium, as you said it can be there accidentaly.i think this species looks more like Bostrichidae, its close to wood boring beetle .
