Migratory birds are likely to transport JE viruses from an endemic area to a non-endemic area. Screening their blood would be the best method to detect JE virus in them. However, it is not practical to sample their blood owing to ethical as well as technical reasons. An alternative method could be usinng bird droppings for virus screening. Can somebody throw light on this possibility?

The idea is to establish the role of migratory birds in making an area vulnerable to JE outbreaks. Of course, JE viruses will be sought in mosquitoes also. Anyways thank you. By the way what is your field of research. I visited your university in 2011 for an invited talk (SEDID).
JEV in birds are not well documented in India. Most of work is going in human and mosquito related aspect. There is limited work on pigs and birds. This two species are more important in JEV epidemiology. Working towards the birds are very good initiative. so, please get permission from wildlife conservator and get bloods from birds that is best sample. Serological is first option, because RT-PCR and virus isolation in blood is difficult but much needed one. Good luck sir.
We are yet to do it. There are ethical questions involved in trapping brds. That is the reason I was exploring the possibility of non-invasive methods like using bird droppings.
