I'm working on a microbial fuel cell which is actually producing current and voltage. I placed the pH electrode at about 5 cm under the cathode which is directly exposed to the air. Can this redox potential be explained by the diffusion of oxygen through the graphite of the cathode?
May you give a little details concerning the condition of experiment, is it only open circuit voltage? what is the material of cathode? what is the electrolyte you used?
The voltage measured against what reference electrode?

Dear Adel and Kuppam,
the cell is a single-chamber and membraneless MFC. I used as fuel a slurry made by organic solid matter and PBS. The final pH was acid (about 5,0) and the potential was measured by the pHmeter, working also with a reference electrode. Unfortunately, after writing this question, I realized the reference electrode was not working, so I'm afraid the redox potential was referred just to the pH measure.
So, recently I started a new experiment with an Autolab potenziostat and a Ag/AgCl reference electrode. This will give me an accurate measure of the cathodic potential.
