Although sociocultural theory (SCT) is a general theory of human mental development, it has been productively extended to include the investigation of second language (L2) development. One of the most influential SCT-L2 studies that followed Frawley and Lantolf’s (1985) article was a paper by Aljaafreh and Lantolf (1994), which examined the relevance of the zone of proximal development (henceforth, ZPD) for L2 learning. The researchers argued that for feedback to be effective in promoting language development it had to be sensitive to a learner’s ZPD, defined by Vygotsky (1978) as the difference between what individuals can do independently and what they can do with appropriate mediation from someone else. This is an important concept because

the theory argues that development does not depend solely on internal mechanisms but on the quality and quantity of external forms of social interaction that is attuned to a learner’s potential ability.

The accent and speech style of the teacher which varries according with one's dialectal group. This includes the southern and northern American accent, i.e. the Georgian vs New Jersey accent.  Prof. Meghan Sumner from Stanford calls it the social weight of spoken words. While the learners show a marked difference in their pronunciations, the phenomenon cuts both ways. The studies on coloured American English accents ranging from baige to yellow to dark brown are a case in point. Of course Hollywood movies glamourize cetain accent type may have an impact on learners perception on the teachers based on the way they sound.
