I added carbon based filler ( surface area > 230 m2/g) to cement mortar to replace some cement. The temperature of the fresh mixture felt slightly higher than previously cast control mixes with same amount of cement and sand. Immediately after casting ( 5-10 minutes) in moulds I found that mortar with filler show signs of surface expansion on the casting face. The surface was still wet and therefore plastic/drying shrinkage seems unlikely. What could be the possible reason? Can it be due to early acceleration of cement hydration and high heat evolution?
