I have found a scale however the responses are in 7 point likert scale. I wish to use it with responses in 5 point likert scale.
Can it be done. If not can one do a pilot study on say a sample of 100 and after getting fruitful results, one can use it for further study.
In general, it is better to use the original scale, but you can use 5 point likert scale instead 7 point likert.

Why would you narrow the variance from your respondents and toss out the foundational work done earlier on instrument validation and reliability? Those seem like large "costs" associated from the very modest ease of using a 5-point rather than a 7-point response set.
Almost similarly to the question (Converting 7 likert to 5 likert response). I would like to know whether or not we can convert 3 points liker scale (1= disagree 2= neutral and 3=Agree ) to 7 point liker scale anchor. Please, do provide me any reference, if you can.
