For a research project at DCAITI TU-Berlin we are discussing autonomous vehicles. In the specific case of autonomous vehicles in other domains we raised the discussion if a remote controlled vehicle is can also be called autonomous?
What is your opinion?
By definition, autonomous is "...having self-government, at least to a significant degree.", however, I have not seen in the field of control/robotics any vehicles being remotely controlled and called autonomous. Hence, I cannot see a remotely controlled vehicle as autonomous.
Aside from an on/off switch, and manual override, I'd say no. Autonomous vehicles are not the same as remote controlled vehicles. They use on-board sensors and possibly external communications with other vehicles and the infrastructure, and drive themselves using clever control algorithms.
The autonom status is refering to a vehicle which can be ennergy supplied from a mobile source, like a battery.
