Typically, I have always understood null hypotheses to be, in effect, a statement of equality where u0 = u1 (for example). And thus, when hypothesis testing the alpha level is set to identify a difference between groups.
However, I have been asked to review a candidates work and he is running an ANOVA, which seems appropriate. However, he has framed his null hypotheses as anticipation of difference between groups and his alternative hypotheses as anticipating equality.
Is it okay to have a null hypothesis that predicts difference as opposed to equality?
