I am presently conducting a literature review on career and the role of regional career on the decision making towards a specific occupation. Need some suggestions or information on readings.
Worth being a bit more specific about your research question(s) or hypotheses. Is it related to a specific occupation. There's plenty of research out their on entrepreneurial career decision making. Please see my contributions for some examples
Thankyou, for your response. I was working on the said research project. Its basically focused on entrepreneurial intentions of students from various regional backgrounds.
Hello Adnan. You might take a look at work done with Social Cognitive Career Theory as an initial approach. See:
Lent, R. W., Brown, S. D., & Hackett, G. (1994). Towards a Unifying Social Cognitive Theory of Career and Academic Interest, Choice, and Performance. Journal of Vocational Behaviour, 45, 79-122.
Lent, R. W., Brown, S. D., & Hackett, G. (2000). Contextual Supports and Barriers to Career Choice: A Social Cognitive Analysis. Journal of Counseling Psychology, 47(1), 36-49.
Another theory with a long pedigree of empirical work is expectancy-value theory (EVT). Whilst it provides an overarching model on motivated achievement choice, it does include cultural domains and specifies how (and in what direction) it effects choice. While many studies are about course selection, it has moved into the the domain of career choice. The most recent EVT model can be found in:
Simpkins, S., Fredricks, J., & Eccles, J. S. (2015). The Role of Parents in the Ontogeny of Achievement-Related Motivation and Behavioral Choices (P. J. Bauer Ed. Vol. 80): Wiley-Blackwell.
An example of an author who is using it in a specific career domain is:
Watt, H. M. G., & Richardson, P. W. (2007). Motivational factors influencing teaching as a career choice: Development and validation of the FIT-Choice scale. The Journal of Experimental Education, 75(3), 167-202. doi: 10.3200/JEXE.75.3.167-202
Hope this is helpful and good luck with your research.
