There is a variety of freely available tools that can convert horizontal radiation to incident radiation on a tilted surface like RETSCREEN and HOMER (legacy) to name a few.

For Europe, there is a very simple and useful online tool called PVGIS, for USA I have not tried but Sunmetrix seems to be a similar service. If you want a more detailed analysis, I recommend using the software PVSyst, which you may try for free for one month. It's relatively easy to use and has a lot of different options.

You may also of course make your own calculation based on geometric considerations, but if you want a somewhat advanced profile I suggest trying one of the above-mentioned tools.

What information are you trying to attain with this calculation? Are you trying to estimate average solar energy gain during a typical day in a given month or an average value over the 4 month period for each fixed angle? The required calculations and the precision that you desire will determine the complexity of the calculation. I second the recommendation of referring to Duffie & Beckman, Solar Engineering of Thermal Processes, Wiley, Chapter 2 for a complete understanding of the calculations involved. There are also good discussions on "rules of thumb" for estimating the effect of panel orientation on annual energy availability later in the chapter.

I appreciate those answers that introduced software products, but for the purpose of my study, what I would like to do is to manually calculate the hourly incident radiation using TMY data. Based on my understanding, to calculate hourly solar insolation, we need to calculate the declination, elevation, and azimuth angle for each hour and apply the formula. I am just not 100% sure about how accurate the result will be and if there is any additional work needs to be done! For calculating solar Incident radiation also called as Solar Insolation, first you have to decide the direction of the module in which you will get a maximum insolation through out the day. (For precise measurement you will also need to calculate Air mass, Wind velocity , latitude and longitude of the place, pressure and tempreture of the module.) After deciding the direction , you just need to put the pyranometer or Solar Power meter in the direction of the module. But remember one thing before doing all this, you have to check your module is in the level. (leveling by spirit level).

One of the criteria for the best angle to receive the major quantity of solar power in one year, is to place the flat collector with an angle corresponding to the local latitude.

The quality of irradiation calculations depends on both the quality of the experimental values ​​on horizontal surfaces as the quality of the models used for calculating irradiation on tilted surfaces.

The recommendations of previous answers are adequate, but it is also interesting to note that the models have different errors depending on the orientation of the receiving surface. In Noorian et al. The NREL code gives the angle of the sun and radiation of the clear sky.

It is necessary to use (preferably measured) hourly solar radiation data for the performance prediction.

The annual simulation of solar radiation helps to optimise the adjustment of the panels.

I have had excellent results in doing just this using the `solaR` package of the statistical programming language R.

Read the stuff and start programming the app you are asking for. You will find the equations for a tilted PV panel with a certain azimuth angle and for any position of the sun during a day (and more).

Interesting thing of this approach is that before you start using some queer twilight app, with your own app, you - by definition - will know what algo's it is made with.

An important asset for an app, because you can even change it according to additional specs you may have. You have become an independent app developer now.

Hmmmm, ya their are theoretical formulas to calculate the radiation, by using it u can find the incident radiance of the tilt surface... And by the way since india is in northern hemisphere u need to keep ur panel facing south to get the maximum efficiency.. And the tilt and is must.. Which has to be increased during the winter and must be reduced during summer..

Haidar, it's strange that you want to change the inclination angle 3 times per year. Usually, it has to be changed 2 times (winter/summer) or 4 times (for each season) per year. I solved such problem for my country in South Еastern Europe 2 years ago. Results are published here:

Panel generation factor (PGF) is used while calculating the size of solar photovoltaic cells. It is a varying factor depending upon the climate of the site location (depending upon global geographic location).To calculate the energy output obtained from a solar photovoltaic array, considering the following factors:

· Photovoltaic array area

· Conversion efficiency of the solar modules

· Geographic location

· Tilt angle of the photovoltaic array

· Operating temperature

There are many possible photovoltaic system configurations. This procedure is valid for a system with the following characteristics:

· Fixed system - no tracking

· Tilted directly towards the north or south (depending on hemisphere)

For more complex configurations, such as an array located at a angle to the north-south axis or a tracking PV system, the analysis includes much more variables and requires specialized software.

1. DETERMINE THE PHOTOVOLTAIC ARRAY AREA

This step is straightforward, it is only important to note that only the specific array area must be taken into account. If the array is split into sections due to positioning issues, the individual areas of each section must be added up, instead of considering the total area which includes the spaces in between.

2. DETERMINE THE TILT ANGLE OF THE ARRAY
