Waste water treatment plant has Inlet BOD 240 and COD 170 and discharge parameters are BOD 10, COD 10. There is no doubt about results what could be the possible causes?????
BOD of 240 will be evaluated by dilution and then back calculation. I would look at the uncertainty analysis associated with the BOD test, the dilution, and then how this is amplified in the back calculation to full strength.
The comparison of inlet / outlet suggests that you material is mostly degradable.
Also: don't rule out sampling / analytical issues, even if you are convinced that the results are not in doubt. Usually, if the results lead you to ask such questions, you should also question the results, not just the paths that would explain the results.
DOD is higher than COD this may be due to presence of microorganisms/water bodies which may need more oxygen than that would be required for the chemical degradation in water.
