I read some papers on both FVM and DEM for simulating sediment transport in channels and each of them has had good results. Regarding that FVM is better for fluids simulation (considering the volume for fluids) and DEM is better for particle motion simulation(the heart of DEM is the force between particles), which one finally is better?

FVM is almost universally used in recent years for models of sediment transport in the hydraulics and applied mathematics community, because it can be coupled to parameterizations of the solid discharge (also known as 'transport formulae') that have been established experimentally at a macroscopic level and used straightforwardly for the coupled fluid flow equations. That does not mean that approaches based on the direct modelling of the underlying microscopic phenomena cannot work, but they might end up being less efficient, or require detailed knowledge of the forces involved, which in the case of particles immersed in a turbulent fluid are in general hard to estimate.
Dear Prof. Bonaventura thank you for your comment. Yes, the important feature of FVM is that it can be coupled the morphologic changes and hydrodynamic variations simultaneously.
Dear Farhad, as Prof. Bonaventura said, If you are following large scale (vs. micro-scale) sediment transport modeling FVM is better indeed and DEM is not practical at all.
Dear Dr. Bohluly, thank you for your comment. I agree with you, but it's needed to evaluate the result of FVM and DEM for same conditions.
Regarding your question in terms of accuracy the FV is first order accuracy and DG is more than first order and for simulation or real case test it needs more computation effort and its methodology is complex than FV

Dear Dilshad A Haleem, thank you for your comment. But, I think FVM cab be used in accuracy higher than one. About computational effort, we need to evaluate both methods for the same condition!
