I have found support classes work better than lectures. I provide notes and audio of the lecture in advance then spend the interaction time answering questions or emphasising important information. We also record the support sessions. I suppose it depends what you are teaching and how it is assessed.

This is a very relevant question. What I am doing is incorporating a lot of more visual and interactive representations. Like interactive working of machines with flash players..how results change with change of certain parameters. YouTube videos.. watching and then asking them to comment. Solving small questionnaires in the middle of the class sometimes helps as well in my experience.

Being humorous and going for discussion instead of lectures really help.

This is a very relevant question under the circumstances. I teach marketing management. After teaching a topic in a class, I ask my students to apply those principles in their lives. In the next class, I ask them whether they have been benefited by application of those principles. I have seen that students take a lot of interest in those types of discussions. It is an old policy. You will see most successful sales personnel talk to the customers about themselves (the customers). To all of us we are the most important and interesting subject. So when I ask the students to talk about their benefits after application of the taught principles, they remain interested. This is how I keep them engaged.

I think in between questions are a great way of getting students' focus back on the classroom topic! Including students into discussions is also a way of getting their attention back.

Another thing I learned is that it helps to acknowledge students at the beginning of the class (greeting them individually as they appear in the online classroom). That way they know you know they are there. That should give you some more attention at least at the beginning of the class.

Helena, its really a challenge to engage and involve students in remote mode of teaching. Specially, in the area of lab demonstration, it is really a trouble. But, for contingency approach, we need to consider the internet connectivity, level of understanding and subject matter to teach. Based on these issues, approaches need to be different.

For common, I found case-based teaching best for students' engagement and involvement. Regarding the effectiveness, we can form different groups and pairs within the group to share ideas and resources. I found effective outcome if we just pause and tell students to write two-three sentences in the topics being discussing. Don't forget to acknowledge their efforts and ideas. This helps them to create new ideas and resources always. One out of three classes of a week, I used to show videos related to the content and tell them to comment, and recommend if they have new ideas. In summary, we need to activate students in the class.
