A number of insects were released in a cage with two different genotypes of plant (resistant and susceptible). At four time points (8 hours, 1 day, 2 day, 3 day), the number of insects on each genotype ere observed along with the number that did not make a choice. I'm nut sure what the best test would be to do an analysis. Ideally, I'd like to know if there's a preference at a time and genotype, but mostly care about the genotype. (I should also mention we do lose a few insects and we have 5 replicates).
The total number of insects should be known.
In that case chi square test would be the appropriate one, i think.
The information given in your question is not adequate to envisage appropriate statistical test(s) to analyze resulting data at the four time points. First, how was the the physical release designed to enable making unbiased choices? What is the nature of the phenotype expressions for resistance and susceptibility? I imagine the difficulty if the insect attractant/repellent from the plant genotypes is volatile will be the concentrations that will determine preference? Is the resistance due to a repellent or a deterrent from feeding or killing substances produced by the resistant genotype? How can it be verified that the death insects did not make a choice that eventually killed them? We also have the individual variations amongst the insects though this can be minimized by randomization. If these factors could be controlled, two - way ANOVA would be the appropriate test for the two genotypes at four time point variables.
