We are looking at purchase of several new analytical instruments. What would be the best things to look for in our search. We are a very small undergraduate chemistry program. Our primary use for the instruments would be teaching with research secondary - so less of a "black box" approach is better and massive through-put is not necessary. Thoughts? [Instruments under consideration: IC, TGA, XRF. We already have ICP-AES, AA, HPLC-UV, GC/MS, LC/MS/MS, DSC, IR, (small) NMR.]
1-In my opinion you have enough facility ( as stated "already have ICP-AES, AA, HPLC-UV, GC/MS, LC/MS/MS, DSC, IR, (small) NMR.]" ) for for undergraduate teaching & research.
2- You have not given any clue about what kind of research you are willing to do .
3- For the limited budget TGA could be the best for your lab. It can give a lot of information and will be very useful for students.

1) agree that we have enough as is. I think this is likely to happen anyway - the vagaries of "budgeting" make P-Chem simple by comparison I think.
2) Types of research would continue to be driven by student interst - but those are also in turn, I think, colored by what they are exposed to. I am personally quite interested in environmental remediation research but that should not srive this conversation (though supporting environmental research is a goal with the IC).
3) I have not used a TGA before. Is it worth the investment compared to what we could already do with the DSC?

I think that best choice could be XRF.
You have instruments for qualitative and quantitative determination of organics (hplc, lcms, NMR and gcms), and also for inorganics (ICP and AAS).
For the thermal profile of materials (DSC). I definitely choose instrument for surface analysis of materials (XRF).
