I often get invitations like the following to attend a conference as a speaker or session host. Please remember that most of them are fake, intended to hack or steal your money. So, please avoid these types of scam emails.

The assembly is August 4-6 in Madrid. There is also the option to participate online.
May we discuss this idea?

This is an important topic to discuss because we all receive many of these scams every day. However, there are many ways to avoid such scams:
1- We should look at the domains of the emails we receive in the invitations.
2- Event sponsors should also be considered when investigating such events.
3- The previous versions of the event.
4- The people who are leading the event (e.g., google them and see their academic reputation in terms of research and events).
5- See the contact information for the event.
6- Where the event will be held, and contact that place.
Actually, many things we can check before accepting such events.

I have not seen one in recent years, but I got a lot of invitations some years ago.
Now that they asked if I would be a speaker or presented, I immediately asked if they would cover all costs - but instead asked me to pay both attendance fee and travel.
At this point I knew something was wrong, since it's customary for the host to pay all costs. (Which was done when I were sent to Brisbane university when they wanted me for a conference. They payed everything and was surprised when I declined first class, to which I said 'Save your money'. In the end I was talked into using Business class at least, as they convinced me I would be better rested on arrival then.)
On the time of one ICANN meeting I actually did travel on my own accord, though the travel was paid for later. But again, as a presenter I certainly did not pay any attention fee. (I met Vinton Cerf of that time BTW, who teamed up with me for 2 days of the conference, I think it was because I dressed up in the native regalia of my people, and he found that interesting.)
Anyway, I declined the scam attempts every time, sometimes while laughing at them on the phone. It appear I have been listed as a person who cannot be fooled and they lost interest in me.
In short: Anyone who ask you to pay anything, is suspect, there's exceptions, but IMO most such are predatory and should be avoided.

I use to get to my university email many fake invitations to participate to different project. but these have stopped from happening this year. I guess the new Microsoft Office 365 system recognizes way better these spam - emails. The IT Director of the university must be contacted in case one is starting to have new suspicious emails. Yes the rule of thumb is simple on this one. As a speaker you benefit the conference, and so they pay your expenses and often the journey. While an attendee, there to listen and learn, will have to cover their own expenses.
And I think Bulcsu is correct in his reply above, I guess also my mail is filtered nowadays. That might be the explanation that I don't see any.

I do feel that Microsoft has a better spam filter. I actually get all those scam messages in my Gmail inbox but not in my institutional Microsoft account. But, often we don't have a Microsoft account, therefore, cannot stop being targeted by spammers!

It was really weird to me that there is no any individual signature since there are personal pronouns in the message indicating one person as the sender ("MY attention", "I wanted", "I AM planning", "I think").
After the lack of response, I've received another message today:
"I hope all is well. Did you get a chance to think about participating in the COVID-19 session?

All scam invitations have a similar look, and this is certainly an example of that.

Another example.
This year, in February, I received an honorary lecture invitation for a congress having "world" in it's name, which was scheduled to be held in Barcelona in October. After contacting the hotel which was stated on a congress website as a venue, they've told me that it has not been planned for their hotel to host any congress, so they contacted the organizers to remove the name and the photos of the hotel from the congress' website. Also, after contacting some of the well known medical organizations which were listed in the "Sponsors" section of the congress' website, they've told me the same - no sponsorship contract signed between the congress' organizers and those organizations. The organizers of the congress put me on the congress website as a honorary lecturer and demanded for participation fee to be paid in advance via PayPal even without any account opened on PayPal.
As far as I can see, no congress has been held and the next is scheduled for July 2022.
I don't know how many participants have been scammed and how many have been taken in this malpractice, but there are certainly stories describing cases where participants actually flew to the conference places finding out that no conference has been planned when they've arrived at the conference venue.
High level of caution is needed in situations like this and every single email must be valued as a scam until proven the opposite.

i just got four invitations after publishing my journal paper related to biodiversity. i have tried to tress the conferences on global list of conferences but can not see them on the list. could it be that the list is incomplete or the conferences are fake
I have received similar invites in the past and this same society had written to me as well. Some to present at a Conference, others to write a book chapter and many more requesting for publication with their journals. Thanks for sharing your story.
Hello sir, I'm a student and I too recently was sent a spam mail regarding attending an educational conference in the USA on drug abuse substance, Sexual assault.
It even claims that it'll help in assisting visa processing and tickets will be free. Also, there was no information of where it will be organised and by which institution.
By the first look I was sure that it was an spam email though gmail failed to recognize it as spam.
One must be weary of unsolicited requests that will look too good to be real.
