When you confine yourself to Animal Husbandry, than all research is automatically applied. The difference can be in the timeframe between the research phase and the moment the results have a direct impact on the practice within the field of Animal Husbandry.
Applied research is preferred in the current scenario in research field, provided one has mastered basic research programs. Impact in the line of research will be felt where there is more of demand to increase economic implications.
Sanjoy Datta, I must state that the question is kind of a straight jacket (it is not either one or the other!). Frequently, applied research gets to a point where it requires basic research to make further progress and the two types of scientific research are not mutually exclusive. Before Gregor Mendel, the fundamental laws of inheritance were poorly understood. However, in subsequent years, scientists got curious and intense basic research by people like Watson and Crick demonstrated the structure of the DNA molecule in the 1950's. In turn, applied science heavily utilised that knowledge and can now attribute traits to specific genes. One might loosely say that every time applied research hits a dead-end, basic research comes to the rescue...so do I want to cast my vote with one at the expense of the other? Maybe not!
we always love to see the results of the research working! However applied research can be initiated only with supporting basic research hypothesis. so also we can have solutions for applied research only through basic studies. Hence both are mutually dependent
Both are equally important. They supplement each other. Basic research leads to applied research. Definitely you apply what you have found out that can work!
I concur with the earlier submissions that both basic and applied research knowledge is important as one leads to another. However, if the two are to be ranked, then applied research may take precedence as it is the end product taking to the field.
