i have butanol as a solvent and reagent, and water is the byproduct of the reaction which should be removed, one article mentions "azeotropic removal" of water, does this mean i can use a dean stark trap? if not what is an easy way of removing the water? i can apply vaccum,but i was looking for something simple. (i don't know if drying agents react with my reagents/products, so i prefer not to use them.)

If the amount of water is relatively low, molecular sieves are a very good option. The water/butanol azeotrope is 55,5% butanol and boils at 92,4ºC so it works with a Dean Stark, since butanol is still considerably soluble in water (73g/L) I would use molecular sieves afterwords as well to make sure the mixture is dry.
