At what extent catalyst performed a catalytic reaction. And what extent it behave like guize or thermally conducting barrier between the flam or gas it exposed ? If i used the THE MINERS LAMP ? Or other .....
To complete my answer may be I can relate to you a story.
Some hydrocarbon detectors in air are catalytical. They are maintained at an adequate temperature. When a mixture of air and hydrocarbon (low concentration) enters in the detector the oxidation reaction raises the temperature and it can be correlated to a concentration. It is not very precise but enough for safety.
One of this detector was near a gazoline tank. One sunday the tank was overfilled so a cloud of gazoline vapour and air arrived on the detector (in the inflammability limit). The rise of temperature was high enough to destroy the detector and ignite the air gazoline mixture creating an explosive propagation of the flame.
