For a continuous measurement, a height of 1.5 m might be impractical, if the device is freely accessible. The European directive 2008/50/EC lists a number of criteria for microscale positioning of air quality measurements (Annex III section C).

My suggested positions were practical for GRIMM 107 (ambient air particles) and 108 (indoor air particles).

Please see the following paper which conducted 24-h sampling by GRIMM.You will see in the material and methods section that the indoor air samplers were placed 130 cm above the ground in the middle of the rooms at least 2maway from the windows, doors, and ventilation inlets and more than 1m away from the walls.

Dear Ata.

The initial question is about outdoor sampling. When I have an outdoor PM measurement in a public space, I would try to mount it higher in order to avoid a loss of the sensor by vandalism. Of course, for indoor measurements vandalism is not relevant.

I am not familiar with the GRIMM dust monitors. Maybe they are sturdy enough to withstand all sorts of impacts. Or maybe in your part of the world it isn't an issue.

The CAFE Directive that Ingo refers to also provides that macro-scale siting is to be preferred when sampling is associated with protection of human health. The siting criteria include: in general, the inlet sampling point shall be between 1,5 m (the breathing zone) and 4 m above the ground. Higher positions (up to 8 m) may be necessary in some circumstances. Higher siting may also be appropriate if the station is representative of a large area.

I'd just add to all the enlightening answers above, particularly Tim's, that usually the higher you measure, the largest is your spatial coverage. This is not necessarily good if you're aiming to asses exposure.

The height also depends on the origin of the pollutant you are looking at. If you are looking at traffic related pollution, the measurement (also a simulation of pollution dispersion) is typically done for 1.5m above ground, which is considered your average nose height. On the other hand, if you are looking at pollution from an industrial stack, your receptor height should be the roof height of adjacent buildings.

If your primary concern is health effects, then I would choose a height near the breathing zone. You are not looking to find the maximum concentration if it does not correspond to the location that would produce the health exposure. To respond to Ingo's suggestion of roof height: this might identify the maximum concentration from the industrial stack but it does not seem to be what you want.

Hi Anchal, typically the height should be 1.5 m above ground in order to simulate human breathing zone. However, care has to be taken in order to avoid any immediate source of pollution in the near vicinity, well protected by fencing and housing. Also you need to have free flow of air from all directions. Hope it helps!!

As per field experience sampling height should be minimum 03 meters.

There are no any interference such as trees,building and point source at site it should be also insured.

The CPCB does indeed specify a height of 3-10 m. This document, however, is essentially a guide for determining ambient concentrations for comparison to the air quality standards. These standards define maximum concentrations in the ambient air with no reference to specific effects on human health. This monitor placement height would be expected to measure higher concentrations than might exist at lower levels such as the breathing zone of 1.5 m. This result may be reasonable when the goal is to measure attainment with the air quality standards.

You must remember that there can be different goals for monitoring programs. You need to focus on the goals of your specific research.
