We are soon starting with a project on assistive technology and work process design in manufacturing for supporting an ageing workforce and facilitate their health.
Do you know examples, projects, papers, etc., that may be useful in this context? Any experiences with such projects?
Why focus solely on an aging workforce whose members are not necessarily in need? The greater issue is the drive to include people with cognitive, visual, or sensory limits irrespective of age. Beginning in the 1980s, for example, early Apple computers were a leader here with scalable fonts and “sticky keys“ that made data entry possible for those with peripheral neuropathies. Having lost my career as a daily newsman because I could not use the old CRT screen computers I refashioned my life as a data broker (sometimes at $300 an hour) and writer thanks to the 128 Fat Mac and its succcessors. In other areas, there have been advances. (Few, but some) engaging workers with Down syndrome in restaurants like McDonald’s. More critically, you might wish to categorize the barriers (desks not designed for persons in wheelchairs, for example; visual limits, hearing limits) and then do percentage of workers with these limits. Solutions for each.
Well, the focus on ageing workfore is to some extent given by the work program. I agree with you that it needs to be analysed thorroughly what might be the actual target group and use case or scenario within that group. We shall make a wise and evidence based decision on this early on in the project.
