About 80% of PhD students realize that they are not meant to be researchers during their PhD programmes. Many of them graduate anyway. What are your thought?
I believe research is all about passion. At first, I never dreamed that I would become a researcher. Fortunately, my doctoral program help me to grow my passion in research. Without passion, I would not be able to find meaningful problem for my research, to determine the appropriate method, to obtain the required data, and to formulate the accountable conclusion and recommendation. Without passion, the only research I ever concluded would be my dissertation.
Students might not complete their studies with the ability or desire to initiate and carry out new research projects independently, but research done under the guidance of a supervisor during their PhD program (isn't that the typical situation, after all?) will still give them depth that will fit them at an enhanced level for a career in industry. Realistically, this must happen quite often in certain fields like engineering.
