Artificial Intelligence has a multitude of impacts on our daily lives, from recommending movies based upon your Netflix viewing habits, to assisting pilots with flying modern jets. One of the most significant applications, however, will be in healthcare.

In 2019, we have already seen success stories of how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to treat patients. For instance, IDx-DR is the first-ever autonomous AI system cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to provide diagnostic support. It works by detecting signs of diabetic retinopathy in ocular images, then applies an algorithm to produce a binary diagnosis in a matter of minutes.

Another way that AI can assist clinicians is by providing the earlier diagnosis of conditions that could lead to early patient mortality. This is especially useful when it comes to diagnosing cardiovascular diseases, which kill around 17.9 million people every year – adding up to roughly 31 percent of all global deaths.

Thanks, Shafagat, for the link. The term "healthier" being used is not totally correct in my opinion. The discoveries of new treatment to treat diseases and illnesses may prolong lives and ease sufferings, but why do we get the disease and illness to begin with? I agree that many discoveries and the knowledge obtained from technology and modern medicine will help us live healthier life. But, do people actually use the knowledge and follow the advice to live healthier life? We already know that lifestyle and the foods we eat contribute very significantly in many common diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular and cancer just to name a few. I've seen people actually behaving just the opposite because they know that whatever they do, there's always some treatment or cure on the other side. So instead of preventing getting sick, we're relying on the cure after getting sick. Technology may cause complacency and change in attitude from trying to prevent from getting sick to dependency on treatments.

Being "healthier" should be measured by the number of people that are healthy and without illness that needs treatment or the frequency an illness occurs and NOT by how well we treat diabetes, heart diseases, cancers, etc.

Having said all that above, new technology and modern medicine do make some people have healthier life such as those being affected by genetic defects, the process of natural aging, severe injuries, and many others.
