If we consider the cost to a nations care system of disability and congenital/inhereted medical conditions. Then I think there is case both moral an financial for reducing the chances of children being bore with disabilities or life limiting conditions. Designer babies need not equate to super humans, it can however equate to healthy and capable children. Like wise if we consider that child birth is till a pretty risky procedure for women (especially in developing countries) , artificial wombs may will be a far safer option.

Also having children can be career limiting for many woman especailly when they take maternity leave. Artifical wombs could liberalise and bring equality to the whole concept of parenting. like wise in it could provide a solution for contries such as Italy an Japan that have falling populations.

This is not a concept or technology we should be sacred of, but we might need to take a slightly different look at the concepts of managed soceity. I'm NOT suggesting eugenics, but maybe we can open the door to improving the economics of long term medical care and provision, through managed breeding and controlled gestation. Healthy, capable people, cost less and place a lower burden on medical services.

A final considertion, is that artifical wombs may be a way of enabling effective colonisation of planets out side our solar system. With small crews or even robots, tending banks of frozen embroyes. That, as the vessel nears its destination are taken to full term. Then educated and readied for the purpose of colonisation in the closing stages of the voyage.

BUT what I fear most is the black market stuff, the choices being available to rich & poor to create further disparity & in ways to create some mighty fit soldiers who will probably only be afforded by the rich.

Finally, whatever pros you have highlighted I tend to agree but still regulations & ethics codes need to be defined before we go for this newer concept.

The point of ethics is very good one as is disparity between rich an poor. But that already exists. look at the issue of affordabilty of health care in the US. As for super soldiers, I would suggest that a gentricaly modified and optimally bread solder produiced in sufficent numbers is far a more cost effective and environmentally friendly system that an M1 Abrahams or an Armata MBT.

However it is also far more likely to turn on its masters if not treated with some human consideration. These would not be for wealthy individuals, but they would be for richer states. Again offering no real improvement or change to where we currently are.

I think when governments realise the advantages of a disease resistant, healthy population that can remain productive workers for a longer proportion of their longer life spans. Then the rich are less likely to be able to monopolise the benefits of the technology.

Black markets will always exist, it is human nature to find and exploit loop holes. However, health equality and equality of ability make it harder for people to justify criminal action. Like wise exploitation and abuse requires disparity of strength and ability. However when that disparity is less pornounced so certain risks are reduced. Lions seldom hunt other loins and they even treat hyenas with with caution.
