A wide variety of methods are available for delivery of educational content within universities, some of the most recent and popular being lecture captures, pod castings or electronic delivery via Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS). However students may also prefer to interact using social networking sites (face book, twitter etc.) Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning, which is very critical in their professional development. This should include increased self-ssessment opportunities, reflective portfolios, collaborative learning, and increased implementation of information and communication technology (ICT) applications, along with the formative assessment. The students should be able to feel more in control‟ of their education; reducing stress and providing a positive environment, helping them to meet challenges in attaining the competency in dental profession. Clinical exposure is a major component of dental training and education and hence it is important that students are exposed to clinical settings as early as possible. Early clinical exposure could be through assisting in dental  procedures; these early involvement could enhance learning experience. It is important that clinical exposure places a greater emphasis on qualitative clinical education, community placements, and other extracurricular experiences.

in our university we have many varieties for teaching dental students.

I am big on using WebCt which is also called OWL  for all kinds of material like p[posting contents,syllabus,power point ,clinical explanation and many others like  marks and discussions and specifically i use it for graded quizzes to be added to the final marks.

however another colleagues of mine uses the clicker method

in his course to teach dental students by using the clickers. Aanother method he uses is reverse lecturing;

thi technique some times it is hard for students who are not ambitious because they do not like to study before coming to class they like spoon feeding hence this method doesnot work for them.'

i attended a lunch and learning seminar where other professors introduced new methods of teaching ,albeit not in dentistry but in arts and it was very interesting  to see theses professors  taught the class using face book, and twitter for a legitimate art course.

This has not happened in my dental school but i am thinking and has not jumped into it yet.

one thing we do in our department and our universality  is teach very successfully ( but not in dentistry ) is teach distant learning eg in a cell biology class we have almost about 80 students take the course live and about 500 students take the course distant learning. of course that cant happen in dentistry but i thought i would mention what  we have

here in india ICT is rarely used to teach dentistry..however there are colleges and universities which are trying to use ICT for dental education. . Use of articulated teaching with the help of audiovisual devices should be encouraged. Both clinical sessions and classroom lectures can be recorded and made available on the Internet so that students who are unable to understand the matter in one session have the opportunity of going over it in their own time and as many times as they feel.

Sir, I am teaching undergraduate students in a govt. institute in India. I do strongly feel ICT as a massive scope in imparting dental education in current times. But whether these contemporary means can serve as a replacement for conventional means still remains a dilemma. We in our department have conducted a pilot study on third year undergraduate students for teaching clinical procedure of impression taking by two teaching methodologies- Hands on practical demonstration (HPD) and video based presentation(VBT). The students were assessed objectively by grading as well as were given a questionnaire to fill for assessment of learner's satisfaction.  Our results clearly show that VBT than HPD is better in terms of standardisation of academic content and future reference but still regarding confidence in dealing with patients and three dimensional view, HPD is better. We plan to conduct this study for didactic teaching as well as other procedures also.Kindly go through the reference.
