I am busy with research with regard to mobile apps in higher education. One of the questions I need to answer is to investigate the use of one or many applications. I have found good information on Gartner, but I need some feedback from practice.
This tool is rather not applicable to educational purposes in the field of natural sciences. It is applicable to services to students, having mainly administrative character.

Using mobile apps for educational purposes is very helpful and effective for both students as well as teachers. Being an researcher I am using many apps for this purpose, to name a few, evernote, mendley, dropbox, coursera, etc.

Also 72 of the top 100 universities in the United States use Google apps. 73% teachers access digital content from their handheld mobile device and mobile networks are accessible to more than 90% of the worlds population.
With all these stats, you can verify its usefulness. There are many other useful apps for teacher like TeacherKit to record attendance, grades etc.

Our app has been used for education (expert cardiologists challenging resident students in proper management of patients affected by heart failure and requiring device implantation). It worked great (100% classification match between groups).
Teachers and students are encouraged to design mobile appsand we see an increasing use of these in the core sciences and engineering departments however I am not aware of any being used in the basic sciences.departments in my University.
