GIS finds application almost everywhere and limited by our imagination, does this mean GIS itself is at its peak and no new discoveries to improve the body of knowledge. What's the direction currently in improving GIS? Are these new directions being brought by diverse applications or new discoveries?
Dear all, GIS is a science and is used in many fields. What is the next?, this is a complex questions, but at all in science there are many advances, especially in different methods that can be used for many applications.

one of very interesting and stimulating (new) frontiers of GIS applications is represented by the approch to link, correlate and dinamically analyze raw data and open access literature, by means of GIS capability to represent spatial/temporal entities and dimensions.
See i.e. at LEAP and LEAP II projects web sites (http://intarch.ac.uk/leap/), in the archaeological field, just to have a case study of this innovative kind of GIS-based applications.

It is difficult to estimate the new applications direction. However, i believe that more GPS applications could appear as; more online mobile cells applications . Also, there is increasing interest of security applications of high resolution imagery integrated with GPS. In addition , different applications of the biodiversity spatial databases in different fields .
First of all, I don't think GIS is a science. It is just a tool or methodology to help solve models. The fact is not a big deal, mathematics is not science either. So GIS would keep going, driven by new application directions and new data source. New application direction must be found while more and more people begin to think in spatial framework, and new data source would bring new problems while adding value to GIS.
