I'm looking for recommendations for measures of suicidality, self-harm, depression and psychiatric symptoms, quality of life and outcomes for adults, that can be used in an online study (i.e. self-report). We're following up some clinical data showing high levels of suicidality in adults with late diagnosis of Asperger syndrome in comparison with other clinical groups, with high level of self reported autistic traits and depression as significant risk factors. However we want to explore this further in a large online study exploring age at diagnosis, educational attainment, quality of life etc. as potential risk factors, with a more in depth measure of suicidality, self-harm and co-morbid diagnosis.
The Symptom checklist 90 might be very helpful since it assesses a range of clinical problems. This is an interesting study; we believe my nephew has Aspergers, but he has not been diagnosed yet.
Thanks for the recommendation! We have been having difficulty locating self-report measures for adults which will give us an overview of suicidality and psychiatric symptoms. The Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation would be an obvious recommendation. You could also use the self-harm/suicide questions of the MINI, although those haven't been validated for self-report use for as far as I know. Note that, as of yet, no instruments that measure suicidal ideation or suicidal behaviour have been validated for online use.
There has been some more research on measuring depression and quality of life online. For depression, you can use the CES-D (see e.g. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17876508). A validated measure of quality of life for adults is the EQ-5D (this one may be useful http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23615959).
I know that this question is a few months old but I thought I would add some suggestions in case it is still helpful to the author, or is helpful to others.
Remember that when one asks about suicidal ideation (especially current suicidal ideation) online it is best to take precautions such as providing mental health resources. In some cases you may also want to have a setup where you can contact participants who endorse high ideation, depending on the study.
When I want to assess suicide levels without assessing current ideation (as is often the case with online studies), I typically use the Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire - Revised; http://www.integration.samhsa.gov/images/res/SBQ.pdf.
