Perhaps silage as a conventional method of forage conservation which undergoes anaerobic fermentation. There are many chemical reactions which take place during storage.

Animals like horses ans sheep with stil more nature and wilderness in their physiolgy can eat some good silage, but not to all to much. I know this especially from horses.
