I am looking for suggestions where can I find documents about slavery during the Nazi regime. National federal archives? State archives? Municipal archives? Archives of big companies? other in Germany? Elsewhere?
Not sure the word slavery would appear often, if at all in officials records. Transportation, heavy labour etc tend to be the words most often used. Being judged a deviant(sic), ie Jew, Sinti, Roma, communist, Homosexual was seen as being a crime in the Third Reich and the language used in public records tended to be that of criminal sentences. It certainly was slavery in all but name but the Nazis desperately tried to cover their tracks.
slavery had been abolished in Prussia in 1807, An act of revocation in the 1930s would have been too public for the Nazi party so the language of criminality was preferred
Look at the search term "Forced Labor". There are publications on Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen going into detail on this subject, mostly Russian and Ukraine prisoners of war.
The books DAS DAIMLER-BENZ BUCH. EIN RUESTUNGSKONZERN IM TAUSENJAEHRIGE REICH has numerous references to original archival sources in Germany and also in London. It was published by Delphi Politik in 1987 with no names but Hamburger Stiftung fuer sozialgeschichte des 20. jahrhundert.
Hans Mommsen and Manfred Grieger are the autors of DAS VOLKSWAGENWERK UND SEINE ARBEITER IM DRITTEN REICH, published ECON in 1997. This publication also have a list of arcival sources used. Hope yiou can find copies! regards, Hans.
PS Both companies have archives reflecting their unhappy past. I did some research in both Stuttgart and Wolfsburg in the 1990s.
