Hi there....I'm now dealing with copper(I) chloride for metal binding experiments..Unfortunately, this copper(i) needs an anaerobic condition for its preparation because it will oxidize to copper(ii) in the presence of oxygen..is there any alternative to prepare the copper(i) instead in anaerobic conditions?
There can be two ways that CuCl is not oxidized as:
[i] Saturate CuCl solution with sulphurous acid[ SO2+H2O]. If at all Cu(II) formation happens, it will at the same time be reduced to Cu(I) as:
2 CuCl2 + SO2 + 2 H2O → 2 CuCl + 2 HCl + H2SO4
SO2 will leave on warming.
[ii] Saturate the solution of CuCl with CO(g) It will form CuCl.2CO which is not affected by air.Finally, CO(g) will leave on warming.
Thank Manohar for suggestion...you said at number one that must used saturate CuCl..what meaning of saturate CuCl?...
My friend, we first pass SO 2(g) in water so as to obtain a saturated solution[ which is actually i sulfurous acid: SO2+H2O=H2SO3]. This solution called saturated solution of SO2 or sulfurous acid is then added in CuCl solution.
I agree with Manohar, practically I sure that you can keep CuCl under H2SO3 solution
